There is quite some ugly threading going on here, but this is only a consequence of the absence of various classes: When we have the right abstractions in place, the threading will basically vanish... In a nutshell: Even if the code might look a bit more ugly than before, it is much more honest about its dependencies than before, which is a good thing.
