Again, this avoids spurious output on stdout, removing the need for hacks around it. Note that the end-of-line fiddling will vanish soon, too: Currently all call sites meticulously add EOL, and the printing machinery goes the extra mile to avoid emitting it itself. This doesn't make sense...
